The 100 “Terms and Conditions” Photo Recap – I Do It Everyday, and Twice on Sundays (3.8)

Hey guys. How is everyone doing? Are you good? You okay? Maybe we should all just drink some tea, take some deep breaths and have a rap sesh about what just happened.

Last week focused on Polis, bridging the Ark’s history with the current politics of war. It was a captivating sendoff for Lexa, a fitting love letter to her policies, her strength, her open mind, and her evening wear.

This week focused on Arkadia, and it was the absolute exact opposite. It was hate mail to Pike, showcasing his bigotry, his closed mind, his shoot-first attitude, and his stupid face (Important distinction – Micheal Beach is very handsome, but the character of Pike is a stupid face).

There is a place for both of these stories, and they are both necessary, even though one is more enjoyable to watch than the other. This week was frustrating. The good news is, this week was SUPPOSED to be frustrating. It had to be. Terms and Conditions was the breaking point for a lot of characters, and without that frustration, this story couldn’t be told.

Was it in the top ten best episodes of The 100? No way, Compadre. It didn’t have the Beautiful Creepster, or Polis, or Clarke, or Kane/Abby sexual tension, or any kind of mutated killer Gorilla… it didn’t stand a chance. What this episode did was set up the NEXT one as a serious contender. Because WHAT IS EVEN GOING TO HAPPEN YOU GUYS?

Perhaps Arkadia’s political struggles isn’t a strong enough storyline to devote an entire episode to (especially if you bench Abby and Octavia), but some pretty top-drawer plot developments shined through. The most important being that Bellamy has finally seen the light! And Raven saw the light for what it really was! Oh, and Kane was sentenced to death. There was that, too.

So, let’s shake the frustration from our bodies by doing the Macarena five times in a row, and then photo recap this thing! The episode began with Monty’s Awful Mom and Pike’s Stupid Face discussing the fact that they are the worst, and I couldn’t understand anything coming from their horrid mouths other than how terrible they are. Then Arkadia got some visitors!

1

2

3

4

Bellamy shot those fine young gentlemen dead! Their offer was so good! Give them Pike (to kill) and then everything will be sunshine and rainbows and puppies and ice cream. WHO DOESN’T LOVE THOSE THINGS? Bellamy, apparently.

5

6

7

8

9

10

Pike wanted to go all Big Brother on his people and set up surveillance. Too bad social media isn’t still around on this show, the people would surveil themselves, ammiright?!? He also wanted to get evidence that Kane is the worst, which will never happen because KANE IS THE BEST.

Speaking of, Kane and Co. still had the listening device in Pike’s office, so they were crowded around the walkie like an old timey family listening to a radio drama.

11

12

13

A plan was afoot! And it wasn’t the only one.

14

15

16

17

So many plans! Jaha and Raven were discussing how to get the Matrix Chip back, when Jasper threw a hissy and a lightbulb went on over their heads. Get the grieving, emotionally unstable guy to help! Solid plans all around.

[Note – I joke about Jasper because joking is my shtick, but I am still on record as saying that his story and his struggle are important. YOU DO YOU JASPER!]

Then Kane tried to talk sense to Pike, which BAAAAHAHAHAHA HAHHA HAHAHA HAHHA HAHAHHA… *sigh* oh Kane.

18

19

20

21

22

23

Needless to say, this talk did not go well. Ugh, Pike IS the worst, right? I know what you’re thinking, “but Toni, what about that bone-marrow-sucking doctor from season 2 who got melted in an elevator? Wasn’t SHE the worst?” At the time, yes. She was the worst. But now Pike has taken that title from her, because she was a legit sociopath, whereas Pike truly believes the codswallop coming out of his stupid face.

That evening, as Kane and Co. settled around their radio show, they were treated to a rehearsed script, because Pike’s Stupid Face KNEW about the bug!

24

25

26

27

28

29

30

While Bob Morley is a superb actor, I like to think that his character Bellamy would be terrible at it. Anyway, now Kane and Co. are working under the assumption that THEY have the upper hand, when they don’t. WHAT WILL HAPPEN??

Kane recruited Sinclair to help with the plan because it’d been a while since we’d seen him (when he turned awesome in Mountain Manor).

31

32

33

34

35

36

Sinclair was caught! And Kane just sat there watching the whole thing go down. Aw man, looks like their plan was foiled. OR WAS IT???

38

39

40

You guys, I think Sinclair might be the coolest. He got to jail and as it turns out, it was all subterfuge! He WANTED to get arrested! So badass. Am I in love with Sinclair now? DON’T TELL HIM, you guys. I want to play this cool.

Meanwhile, Raven asked Jasper to figure out Monty’s password to Pike’s office because she, as well as everyone who is paying attention, knows that Jasper and Monty’s heart beat as one. Man, I miss those two. My heart would sing if I could just see them do their special friendship high-five… PLEASE SHOW, I need this.

41

Kane arranged a secret meeting with Bellamy on his Try To Talk Sense tour, which dissolved into a very sexy staring contest.

44

43

46

45

47

48

49

Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!

Then we had a cute / tense scene with Miller and Bryan.

50

51

52

Bryan bugged Miller’s jacket! *SIGH* Please don’t break up this couple. I enjoy their tight t-shirts and also their personalities but mostly their tight t-shirts.

Raven and Jasper made it into Pike’s office (which likely smelled of ass and deceit), and found the Matrix Cracker oven.

53

54

55

56

57

58

59

60

Raven realized that she doesn’t remember anything about Finn! How devastatingly haunting. For real, friends. This is downright awful and terrifying. To lose memories of someone you loved and lost. Damn. That is a nightmare. I hope this gets fixed pronto. PUKE UP THAT MATRIX COOKIE, GIRL!

Then it was time for Sinclair and Lincoln to put on a show of their own.

61

62

63

64

65

But it was all a ruse to distract the guards so Kane could do this:

66

67

68

Huzzah! Kane loaded Pike’s Stupid Face into the back of a car and went on his merry way!

69

UGH! Dammit, Bellamy!

70

71

72

Remember last season when it looked as though Finn was going to die, and I was like, “no way, nuh-uh, they won’t do that, not in a million years,” and then HE DID and I ate my hat so hard and it tasted so gross. The thing is, I don’t think Kane will die next week, but I TRULY DON’T KNOW FOR SURE AND I AM TERRIFIED. This show follows through! The 100 takes our hearts and squeezes out blood-juice, then cuts it with our tears and makes cocktails that the writers and producers sip while brainstorming more ideas. Kane may die, you guys. HE BETTER NOT, but he may.

After a seriously great montage filled with tension and SO MANY meaningful glances, Monty’s Awful Mom asked if he and Bellamy know who else was involved, and Bellamy gave our beloved hero THIS look.

73

Huzzah! He didn’t tell her about Miller and Harper! This looks to be the beginning of the end of Bad Bellamy… Badamy? Haha… don’t ever put me in charge of shipper names.

We are hard on the characters we love because we hold them to a higher standard. We’ve seen Bellamy’s growth from a big jerk, to an anti-hero, to a bonafide hero, and now into a misinformed accidental villain (and maybe back into an anti-hero??). The cruel reality within the world of The 100 is that the characters we have grown to love don’t have the benefit of watching their own show every week. They don’t get to see the bigger picture. They don’t get to see Indra being awesome all the time, or Lexa’s evening wear. They have to make decisions based on what they know, which can be frustrating for us viewers, because we know things they don’t.

I still believe this turn of Bellamy’s happened rather quickly to be 100% believable, but the writers made a bold choice, and they stuck to it. It would have been even worse for him to quickly change back to our beloved hero simply because the writers know what he doesn’t. It needed to take time. Luckily, it looks as though this frustrating journey with Bellamy may be coming to a close.

SOME STUFF

  • Blatherskite = a person who blathers nonsense. Tommyrot = utter foolishness. Horsefeathers = foolish or untrue words. Monkeyshine = mischievous activity; a prank.

  • “They know I’m with Jaha, but they think you’re just…” – “A drunken idiot. I know.”

  • It was nice to see Harper involved in all this hambuggery. (Okay, I may have looked up old timey words for my radio drama joke, and now I want to incorporate them into my everyday life. Hambuggery means false or deceptive behaviour. What fun!)

  • Who is in charge of music for this show? The song during the ending montage was haunting and powerful and perfect. Well done.

  • Monty’s Awful Mom gave him a pep talk that was like, “surviving is the right thing to do in all circumstances no matter what, eff moral standards.” And it made me wonder how THAT woman raised a boy who, when he saw the Grounders get blood-raped, and heard Maya’s stance of, “without it we die, what were we supposed to do?”, he responded with, “die.” WHERE IS THAT MONTY NOW??? He obviously gets his heart of gold from his dad.

  • “Is any of this worth lying to someone I love?” PREACH, Bryan.

  • Bellamy shed actual tears when Kane was sentenced to death. I needed to point that out.

  • Are Octavia and Abby off in the woods somewhere playing Settlers of Catan? SOMEONE should be enjoying a nice game of Catan, RIGHT? … Someone play Catan with me.

  • Heyyyyyyyyyy Macarena!

NOOOO!! NOT OUR BELOVED KANE!!!!!!!! 😩 I was devastated when he was sentenced to death. Kane and Abby have some unfinished Sexual Tension business to solve!!!
UGH! I hope with ALL my might, heart, and soul that he DOESN’T die!
But if he MUST, to keep up with The 100 tradition of ‘no one is safe,’ then the writers have to have a (Kabby?) kiss scene!!! It’s a MUST!!! Or else my life won’t EVER be fulfilled! :'((

I really enjoyed this episode yes it had some minor issues but I can overlook them now that I know what’s happening next episode. When bellemy shot those two grounders I actually yelled at the TV “OH BELLEMY YOU IDIOT WHY.” I’m so glad he wised up at the end and that look on his face at the end the tears when pike gave the kill order for Kane got me and at that point I knew he would turn on pike and go back to Kane, kane has been a father figure to bellemy for along time now so I’m glad he’s going to help but I’m also pissed that he didn’t show Kane more faith and loyalty but again that’s all ok now that he’s on the correct path of throw pike in a volcano. OK MONTEYS MUM IS A CRAZY PERSON LIKE COCOPOPS, FRUIT LOOPS, CRUNCHY NUT CRAZYPANTS LEVEL OF CRAZY PERSON. GO RAVEN I’m so happy there focusing on her and how messed up this whole city of light thing is and what it’s doing to people, please fix her to gods please fix her. the next episode looks great and we’re finally going to have Clarke, Octavia, bellemy, Montey Harper, Miller, Kane, Lincoln and Abby all in the same place I’m so happy.

This episode reminded me a lot of the Battlestar Galactica episode “Blood on the Scales”, when Alessandro Juliani (Gaeta/Sinclair) starts a mutiny and ends up in a cell sentenced to death with two other guys.

Hah, hah, I feel like people should really have been prepared for this episode, it was called “Terms and Conditions” for goodness sake. That the small print in all contracts you sign up for and don’t read. Its important and you should pay attention, but until you have to sue someone and didn’t realize your rights to litigation are limited to arbitration under the laws of Puerto Rico (this means less to me, I am located in the same federal district as Puerto Rico even though their weather is much better than mine).

Oh, Octavia hasn’t made it back from Polis yet.

Now, whose bromance brief break up did we get more effected by this past season, Diggle and Oliver, Scott and Stiles or Jasper and Monty? I actually think Scott and Stiles bothered people more (probably because it was based on a lie and both guys bending into the worse version of their best qualities and you can see the first step of fault in the other two and you honestly were kind of with Lyla on Arrow which seemed to be John get over it, and here, well, we don’t blame Monty for anything).

I just really don’t know if Kane will die or not, I guess that Bellamy is trying to correct himself next week and then both Indira and Octavia are on their way, there are enough people who might muck up Pike’s works (especially since he will try and make an example of Kane). The fact of the matter is, I am pretty convinced that Roan has to offer some assistance. Like that Clarke has to appeal to her only other ally, especially one who PIke’s people particularly hate.

You’ve made a very good point about roan he is the only other true alive alliance Clarke has formed since Anya, Lexa and Indra. Roan hasn’t been used to his full potential and I feel like we’ve only seen 1/8 of what roan and the ice nation can bring to Clarke and the 100 itself.

I’ve actually been wandering about the concept of marriage in the grounders traditions we haven’t seen anything resembling a marriage or family yes we’ve had a father and son but I don’t think I’ve seen mum dad and children. I said this a while ago that Clarke and roan could get married to form an alliance to keep peace I would love to see the politics of such a union. When ALIEs creator landed on earth there were people who survived maybe she created the 12 nations just like it was on the ark concidering she never saw the 13th station as part of the whole I have a feeling she felt superior so she made THE COMMANDER/POLIS and the 12 clans. I really hope they delve into this next season and even have the 1st natural birth in arkadia happen and see how that changes things.

    KateSullivan Mar 13, 2016
An odd passing thought that I had, its kind of odd there doesn’t seem to be things like marriages or even traditional families and then with the Ark people, they likely encouraged if not pan sexuality, likely encouraged same sex relationships as part of the overall birth control effort, that I almost wonder if there is anyone around who remembers that as an alliance making thing even though I imagine the Commanders likely discourage them because its probably more important to keep the separate alliances apart. Hey, as this is a random stream of consciousness reply so far and barely responsive to your comment, its kind of odd that there are 12 tribes and then the Skikru and even the Mt. Men and there were 12 stations on the Arc with their base on earth being the Mt. Men and there was the thirteenth missing station.

Also, I was done with breakfast so I didn’t spill/spit anything. Lesson (hopefully) learned!

What surprised me in all of this was that KANE is the one to kinda make Bellamy snap out of it. Kane! I was so sure it would be Octavia because if Clarke wasn’t able to do it nor Kane talking to him, it had to be Octavia! But no dice, Frodo. KANE. I like Kellamy. Or something.

I really missed Abby, though she tends to fuck things up when she’s in charge (let’s face it), but because I’ve been reading your old recaps, I really REALLY miss Wick. I wonder where that beautiful, wonderful, cocky man is.

As I was watching this episode, I became so angry and frustrated that I got a humngous migraine. I could actually feel my ms getting worse and new lesions growing on my brain. I was so pissed off at Pike and Bellamy that my symptoms exascerbated ten fold! I told my doctor about this this morning and he was like, “maybe it would be wiser for your health if you stopped watching this show.” I was like, “if I die, it’ll totally be worth it because I got see Bryans arms bulging around like pythons.” The 100 is such a good show to be able to elicit that kind of extreme emotional response! First of all, I can see everything and I think whatever magic you’ve worked is here for good.
What a lovely review to a lovely episode!
I laughed so much at the “To who”/”To Whom” exchange, ang the “nuh huh/Yuh huh” between Kane and Pike, oh, I can’t also forget Monty’s password and Finn’s description! Your Jasper was on point this week (like on the show, he shone once he got something to do rather than exclusively mope).
On a more serious note, thank you for pointing out that it’s easy for the viewer to judge, since we have the bigger picture, while the characters never know what is happening where, etc. Although, it would have been tragically funny, had Pike reminded everyone of how they gave Finn to justice and it gave the Arkadians nothing but treachery and had Kane actually succeeded and brought Pike to the Grounders who must be in full mourning right about now.
Also, I kinda love the moral dilemma I’m struggling with now – which would be worse, a person who is horrible because fully convinced they’re in the right, or simply a person who is horrible because they have no idea/care about what right is? That mention of s2 Doctor was very well placed)))

Finally, Raven is the first to ever stumble away from Alie’s control because she is just. That. AWESOME.
    Who else is not surprised?

Like, in my dream scenario, she is preaching about survival and being awful to people and then WHAM!! The gorilla rampages in and tears her to pieces.

I am not understanding why some people didn’t like this episode, it was intense. I feel like this episode really had a lot to say, not only about what’s going down in Arkadia, but about what is going down in our real lives (is this real life? or is this just fantasy?).

Even just the title of the episode: ‘Terms and Conditions’, while referring to the “terms and conditions of your surrender” makes you think of those annoying pop ups every time iTunes or a social media site adjusts its privacy settings, informing us that the government is stealing our souls and we completely ignore them and click “accept”

Guess what that ties into? Pike had Monty set up surveillance of Arkadia, citing the need to stop internal threats, much in the same way our governments are using the internet, social media, and our new media devices to keep track of their citizens. The 100 writers are taking this huge issue that is going on in real time and scrunching it into a little ball and throwing it at our faces.

The theme of government surveillance led me to think about the parallels between Kane and Edward Snowden. Both were declared traitors for taking drastic measures to help their citizens. While for Kane this meant throwing an unconscious Pike in the back of a rover, for Snowden it meant trying to alert the american public to the level of surveillance the government was doing, not on foreign threats, but on their own citizens. Kane needs to go to Russia (would that be Polis in this senario?)

Everyone is hating on Bellamy and Monty’s storyline, because there seems to be no lead up to their choice of backing Pike, but I think this goes to show how easy it is to end up on the wrong side. Monty, in particular, was never shown to have made one big choice to follow Pike, but rather a series of small choices that led him down this path. Now, he is on the wrong side, he knows it, but he almost isn’t sure how this happened. Again, this can parallel our society. Most people choose not to pay attention to the crappy things their governments are doing. When the government acts like a dick and we choose to not be aware of it, then we are made unwitting and unwilling accomplices to the things that they do. By allowing governments to act with impunity, society itself is an accessory to everything they do.

    Aaaaand I’m done… for now… maybe…

It is easier to blow the system up (hence Trump, the giant political turd,) than it is to admit it is broken and take the time and energy to fix it. Sigh, but this is my problem too and I am American so on behalf of my country I apologize to the rest of the world in advance! In case Bozo boy the Psychotic Fascist wins!

People are still mad they killed Lexa. That’s basically it. I checked The100 hashtag during commercials when this was airing, and 20% of the people really hated what was going on wondering where Clarke was and why they weren’t showing her/Polis. Most of them had names related to “Lexa” and “commander” or sth like that. So that’s my guess.

I found it to be a very frustrating episode, I tweeted about that a couple of times, because it really was, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad episode. A LOT happened and pieces were placed where they have to be for next episode.

You’re right, people are up in arms about Lexa. Which I think is a bit silly, this is The 100, it’s kind of like Game of Thrones. No one is safe, and no one singling out a character by killing them off, it’s just no one has good life expectancy in the world the show inhabits.

This episode was definitely super focused on Arkadia, and I was bothered by that at first, but having all the action, not only in Arkadia, but nearly completely inside made the entire episode hugely tense and I thought it was fantastic. It wasn’t explosive like Lexa’s death, but more an intense slow burn. So good.

True story: I started reading the Terms and Conditions review and it was all talkey and complainy and like a genuine lecture with unfunny pictures.

After a brief moment of “WTF is wrong with the word this is terrible where is my The 100 hilarity?” Followed up by some foot stomping and pillow mashing, I realized I was reading Kaitlin’s review.

Then I found Toni’s and all was right with the world.

I look at my recaps as the dessert to Kaitlin’s dinner. She provides insight and intellectual deconstruction (which I really enjoy reading once I’m finished writing mine), and then I provide the absurdity. I like to think they compliment each other.

This is I think the first boring episode I’ve watched in the series.

Really? I was on the edge of my seat the whole episode. I just can’t imagine finding it boring at all.

Oh my God… That scene with Kane and Bellamy that made me feel as if Kane thought of Bellamy as his own, incredibly idiotic, son.

Now you ruined it! And I love it.

TRUTH!! “This show follows through! The 100 takes our hearts and squeezes out blood-juice, then cuts it with our tears and makes cocktails that the writers and producers sip while brainstorming more ideas.”
    Love your recaps…still laughing…
